Greater Meander Irrigation Scheme Augmentation (GMISA)
PWS served as the head contractor for the Greater Meander Irrigation Scheme Augmentation (GMISA) from Hagley to Caveside, a crucial project for Tasmanian Irrigation in one of Tasmania’s most productive agricultural regions. This project followed the availability of additional water to Tasmanian Irrigation, necessitating significant infrastructure upgrades.
We installed 21 km of piped upgrades, including new air and scour valves and property outlets, with pipes ranging from DN315 to DN710, up to PN12.5. The materials used varied from HDPE and DICL to concrete. Alongside the pipeline, we completed a range of civil works, such as:
- Culvert upgrades
- Road repairs
- Demolition of redundant structures
PWS managed all activities within the alignment, negotiating access with landowners and overseeing:
- Pipe deliveries
- Butt Welding
- Excavation
- Pipe laying
- Backfilling
- Fitting
- Fencing
- Site remediation.
The project included major water crossings that required piped diversions to maintain open channel irrigation water delivery, five road crossings, two horizontal directional drilling (HDD) sections under the State Rail Network, and two Tas Gas crossings. We ensured the permitting process was managed efficiently to avoid delays.
We procured and installed all fittings and fixtures and installed property outlets provided by Tasmanian Irrigation. The project was completed over 10 months, carefully scheduled to meet landowner requirements and the irrigation season.
